The Reason for Jellyfish

Hal Sirowitz

God created the ocean
for us to swim in,
Father said. But for
your mother that isn't enough.
She also wants Him
to keep it clean by getting rid
of all the jellyfish, broken shells,
& seaweed. But if He did what she wanted
it wouldn't feel like the ocean anymore.
It'd be just another crowded pool.

Hal Sirowitz, the poet laureate of Queens, will be reading his work
at Readings and Misreadings, March 20, 2003, at Makor.
