Internships with Zeek

Zeek magazine is looking for interns. Please read the descriptions about different kinds of interns carefully, then apply to the email listed for each. Unfortunately, Zeek cannot pay interns, but we don’t ask for much from you—about 3 hours a week, on average—and interning is the absolutely best way to find out if a job in publishing is right for you and to build your publishing resume. It also really, really helps us at Zeek. We are pretty much all volunteers, so you are really joining our crew—and some interns do become Zeek staffers. Read on.

Editorial Interns

You will go to our mailbox at least once a week and sort through the mail. You will read unsolicited manuscripts that come in, and advise us on whether we should consider publication. You will proof articles online before they go live. And we hope you will write pieces for us. If you live in a city where we are having an event, we may ask you to attend the event and help us sell magazines—often, these are A-list events that would usually require tickets, etc., and you get in free! You will be surpervised by Editor in Chief Jo Ellen Green Kaiser, who has over 10 years of magazine experience. You can be located anywhere to be an editorial intern. To apply, send a resume plus a letter stating why you want to be an editorial intern, and what you think (honestly) of Zeek’s content. Send to joellen@zeek.net.

Art Interns

Art interns will search for artwork for our quarterly print issues. This involves both looking online and going to galleries and shows in your area. You will be supervised by Art Director Bara Sapir, who is a professional artist as well as a spiritual teacher and entrepreneur. You can be located anywhere to be an art intern. To apply, send a resume plus a letter stating why you want to be an art intern, and what you think (honestly) of the Jewish art world. Send to director@testprepny.com.

Publishing Interns—Bay Area only

Maybe you are thinking of starting your own magazine or website. Or you are smart enough to realize that even if your goal is to become a freelance writer or editor, you need to understand the business side of publishing. Welcome! Though Zeek is super small, we are engaged in every aspect of both print and online publishing. Since we are small, you will get to do it all, from hand stamping hundreds of envelopes (alas) to creating an online marketing campaign. Must be located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and must be willing to commit at least 3 months—you will spend your first month being trained, and then “pay back” the training the next two months. You will be supervised by Zeek Executive Director Jo Ellen Green Kaiser, who was associate publisher of Tikkun and has worked as a consultant for indymagazines including Bitch, Bay Nature, Light of Consciousness, and many others. To apply, send a resume plus a letter stating why you would want to volunteer to lick envelopes. Send to joellen@zeek.net (p.s. if you’d like to know what being a publishing intern is like, I’d be happy to refer you to our current intern, Matt Runkle).
